OUR HISTORY
How the Choir Started
by Sarah Cheesmur
When my mother moved to Cuckfield for the last few years of her life it made me realise how especially vulnerable to loneliness and social isolation older people could be and what a serious effect on their health this could bring. It occurred to me that she loved to sing and that a choir for people of retirement age and above would offer so many benefits. So, together with Jane Haughton, who agreed to take the role of Musical Director and with funding from West Sussex County Council and the Independent State of Cuckfield on Friday 19th April 2013 the Cuckoo Choir was hatched. Since then the powerful combination of singing, socialising, cups of tea and light hearted fun brings a sense of well being and community.

I’m so proud of what we have achieved together. We have sung our hearts out and taken part in concerts and social events that have raised money for charities. We have travelled as far afield as Budapest to sing. Special friendships have been made and happy hours have been spent together.

Continually people tell me how much the choir means to them - a lasting and meaningful legacy thanks to my Mum.
